Holy Redeemer Students Not Worried About Swine Flu

Holy Redeemer Students Not Worried About Swine Flu - Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 6:20PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- A student at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre became ill last week. It's a probable case of swine flu. Now the school is trying to assure students it's safe to hold classes.
Holy Redeemer Principal Jim Redington says he spoke with both the city and state health departments before deciding to keep the school open.

Senior Greg Chaya said, "I heard that there's one kid, I don't know what grade he was in, that has been out for a little bit and rumored to have swine flu."

Students arrive for classes at Holy Redeemer aware of a probable case of swine flu in their school. The principal posted a message on the school web site after Monday's classes.

It states the student was diagnosed with flu last week -- days into the illness. -- and that no other students have symptoms.

Students soon began talking and texting about the case -- and many don't seem too concerned. Senior Don Brady said, "I think with the proper precautions we can take care of it. I think it's not such a big deal as everyone's making it out to be."

Senior Tim Gryziez added, "I don't think there's any concern for us and it's safe to come to school today.

Some parents found out about the possible swine flu case by seeing news reports on TV, including Karen Campbell, whose daughter Laura is a sophomore, here. "I'm a little bit concerned but I just told her to use proper precautions, wash her hands. Stay away from anybody who's coughing and sneezing and just use good common sense," she said.

The student who had the flu was cleared to return and showed up for classes Monday. It's expected to take several days before tests reveal if, in fact, that student had swine flu.
